How Films & TV Fake Computer Screens (Without Getting Sued)
Almost every scene with a computer in it is faking the computer. When you wonder how films fake computer screens, the honest answer is that productions almost never shoot real software doing real things — it's slow, it's legally messy, and it photographs badly. This guide walks through the on-camera screen problem, the three ways crews solve it, and why a browser-based screen prop has quietly become the default for everyone from student shorts to streaming dramas.
The on-camera screen problem
A monitor in shot has to do three jobs at once, and they fight each other:
- Read as real to the audience in the half-second it's on screen.
- Photograph cleanly — no flicker, no moiré, no blown-out highlights that wreck the DP's exposure.
- Clear legally — no logos, trademarks, or recognisable real interfaces you don't have permission to show.
Real software fails at least two of those almost every time. A genuine login screen flickers, shows the wrong time, exposes real data, and slaps a brand you haven't cleared right into the middle of your frame. So crews fake it — the only question is how.
The three ways crews fake a screen
Option 1: Run the real software
Tempting, because it's "free" and already installed. In practice it's the worst option. You're now responsible for clearing every logo on screen (see our piece on real software on camera, clearance and logos), you can't make it do anything dramatic without it being obviously slow or wrong, and the operator has to nail live keystrokes on every take. One unexpected notification and you're going again.
Option 2: Build it in post
Hand the shot to a VFX or motion-graphics artist and composite a fake UI onto the screen later, usually in After Effects. This looks fantastic — and it should, given the cost. Screen comps are fiddly: corner-pin tracking, screen reflections, rolling shutter, colour matching. Budget anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand per shot, plus turnaround time you may not have. Great for hero close-ups; ruinous if you have forty incidental monitors.
Option 3: A practical prop you can shoot live
Put something real on the monitor that looks like working software but is entirely simulated, and shoot it in camera. Historically that meant a runner building a fake interface by hand, or buying a one-off animation. The modern version is a self-contained web page you open full-screen in a browser — no install, no internet, no logos — and point the camera at.

The browser-prop approach

Because the content is invented, there's nothing to clear. Because it's always moving and never loops obviously, it survives long takes and hours of unattended background filming. And because it's a normal web page, it runs on any laptop, tablet, or display you can plug in.

- A generic search-engine results page when a character just needs to look something up and you can't show the real one.

Readability-on-camera tips
A fake screen only works if the audience instantly buys it. A few practical notes:
- Bigger than feels natural. Camera robs detail. Bump font sizes and line weights so headlines and key labels read in a wide shot.
- Mind the refresh. Set the monitor's refresh rate and your shutter angle to avoid scan bars; a 180-degree shutter at a matching frame rate is the safe starting point.
- Kill the gloss. Matte the screen or light from the side to control reflections — a glossy panel throws the whole set back at the lens.
- Let it move. Static screens look dead and fake. Motion sells "live software" more than detail does.
- Match the colour temperature. Screens read very blue; gel surrounding practicals or warm the screen slightly so the monitor doesn't fight your grade.
