A glowing monitor in frame is a prop like any other — it has to belong to the world, hold up across coverage, and read on camera without a stock logo, a spinning beach ball, or a screensaver killing the take. The trap is treating the monitor as a magic prop that "we'll sort in post." Sometimes you will. Often you can't afford to, or the DP wants something real to light to. The content should imply a person and a job, not just "computery stuff."
Practical wins when you treat the monitor as dressing:
- It earns its place. Always-moving content reads as "a working machine," not a paused screenshot.
- No clearance headaches. Fictional software means no trademarks, no real brands, no logos to blur.
- It survives long takes. Procedurally generated content that never loops obviously holds up through hours of unattended rolling.
Match the screen to the world
The fastest way to break a scene is a screen that doesn't match the room. Each environment has a visual grammar the audience already knows, so lean into it.

Pick the screen that matches the set's logic, then nudge the dressing around it: the right mug, the sticky note, the lanyard. The screen does the heavy lifting; you sell the rest.
Continuity across takes
Screens are a continuity minefield because they change every second by design. A few habits keep you out of trouble:
- Decide what's allowed to move. Ambient motion (tickers, sweeps, blinking status) is fine and even helpful — nobody clocks the exact frame. What you don't want is a big, readable number or a name that visibly resets between a wide and a close-up.
- Shoot the hero state first. If a line of dialogue references something on screen ("she's flatlining," "access granted"), capture that moment cleanly across all the coverage you'll need before moving on.
- Photograph the setup. Snap the monitor, its position, brightness, and the room dressing for every scene so reshoots and pickups match.
- Note the time of day. On-screen clocks and timestamps can contradict the scene. Many screens let you ignore this safely, but check it before you wrap.
Brightness and colour temperature for camera
Monitors lie to the eye. What looks balanced standing at the desk often blooms or goes cold on camera.
- Knock the brightness down. Consumer displays run far brighter than you need. Start low and let the DP bring it up — a hot screen blows out and flickers on rolling shutter.
- Mind the refresh and shutter. Banding or roll usually means shutter angle vs. refresh rate, not the prop. Settle it with the camera team early.
- Watch colour temp. A cool 6500K screen against warm practicals can look sickly. Some productions gel the monitor or dial the display's warmth to sit in the scene.
- Kill auto-everything. Disable auto-brightness, sleep, notifications, and OS chrome. Full-screen the browser (hide the address bar) so nothing breaks the illusion.
Multi-monitor builds
A wall of screens sells scale instantly — the surveillance hub, the trading floor, the war room.
